Early Morning Blast
on: 03 May, 2021, 02:58:29 AM
Woke up early today and decided I'd make a break for it before the general public got up and moving about.  Left the house about 6am and headed north.  Through Hillsboro and the far west side of Portland to Hwy 30, and north again along the Columbia River to the town of Scappoose. Heading west out of town is a steady climb in elevation into the mountains surrounding the area, along a very good, somewhat twisty piece of road called the Scappoose-Vernonia Rd.

Turning south on Hwy 47, it's just a short ride into the town of Vernonia, and a good spot to stop for a cup of coffee.

Once warmed up, I headed south, then south west following the Nehalem River on Timber Rd, across Hwy 26 until it it ends at Hwy 6. This is a great ride, but photo ops are few and far between, because there really are no good spots to pull off. At least not to me.
East on Hwy 6 for a short while, then east on Gales Creek. A pretty little valley in the foothills of the Coast Range of mountains.

Getting close to home, I always try to run around Henry Hagg Lake. It's an 8 mile loop of wide, meandering road. One of the best around here, in my opinion.

And of course, the obligatory pic including my filthy bike. Almost embarrassed to show it.

Used my BeeLine moto for the first real time today.  Works a treat!

Not a bad morning.  130 miles and home at 9:30.

Great ride, you have some lovely countryside in Oregon. Looks like the highlands of Scotland.

Great pics! Thank you. But is that the dreaded strip felling in the second pic?

Called clear cut over here. Looks like hell now, but they are required to replant, and in a few years will be thick with new trees.

... as long as high winds / heavy rains don't remove too much topsoil in the meantime! They'd have been better at least leaving an occasional tree ... IMO.
