    AIS Question

I have noticed my OE air filter becomes discolored/dirty very quickly.
It occurred to me after reading the old "how to" AIS posts, my reeds have likely never been cleaned, replaced, or blocked off.
Could this be causing the filter discoloration? ie Exhaust gases getting past the reeds into the airbox.

Do you guys suggest blanking plates (no longer made, so DIY) or just plug the vents in the airbox as per Angry Rooster's posts?
    Thanks,

I'd try Angry's method but note Hamiln's post.  Our bikes of that vintage didn't have AIS down our way.

Secondly, the air filter is there to catch dirt.  Leave it in place for 20,000ml but ensure that hole number 2 shown in Angry's fist pic is plugged.  They were open to atmosphere from factory and let dirt into the engine under the filter - long sad story.
The best substitute for brains is ........what?

I found a set of plates 3 or 4 years ago but can't remember where. (Oldtimers disease).  :191:

Just did a quick search and found these, but seem expensive.....

I also recall someone tapping the the nipples and sealing bolts in place, but angryrooster's  method  seems much easier.

FWIW Dave, I blocked mine and honestly couldn't tell a difference in performance or discoloration of the filter. Ive got a BMC filter in mine.   :031:

Thanks Grouchy. Well it's all a bit of classic over-think perhaps. I suspect I dont need to spend $56 + air freight from Oz to still wind up with a dirty filter. (It's got to be blowby?)

Does your air filter get dirty in a short time? Less than 1000 miles?

That would mean I actually check it that often :745:

Seriously it's apples to oranges......I service yearly...BUT....I live on a gravel road and, and when I ride to work park in a gravel lot with lots of traffic to stir s&#t up.   I cover it when parked but that dust still gets everywhere.  Not sure it's a fair comparison for you.

I don't see how the SAI affects the air filter getting mucky, the exhaust gas is causing air to be sucked from the airbox via the reeds and solenoid, not blowing into it.

I pulled out my snorkel, put the new filter in. Rode to NC mountains & back from FL. After 1000mi+/-, I took it all apart again to put part of the snorkel back in (too much intake honk) and the filter was dirty already. So who knows?

My compression tester hose fouls on the head casting so I can't tell you what the comp. is.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
    Thanks for the info guys!
