I read an article somewhere ,where a guy said it was the plate inside the starter motor that has the brushes on it,he said it fits into a groove in the casing , and that this plate is the main earthing point , when the starter gets overly hot it expands the gap , giving a weaker earth .does this sound feasible ,he said that putting an extra wire from this plate to earth ,cured the problem on a bmw he had the same problem with, and it used the Delfi motor same as tiger has ,he also has the tiger with this problem but hasn’t got round to fixing it yet .says he’s laying it up in winter ,he s doing it then .what are your haughty guys thanks rob

My thoughts are just open the throttle a bit if she's warm. It's second nature after a while.

If it won't turn over, how does opening the throttle help, don't get this one.

Because you get one go at it and it will start if you open the throttle. Thereafter you are stuck for 15 minutes until she cools. That's why  :028:

I'll post this here for those that didn't read it.

Now, if it was as simple as turning the throttle a bit, don't you think Freddie & Paul82 would have come up with that easy fix?

re the start motor, the brush springs push the curved edge of the plate against the inner surface of the casing and there would have to be a LOT of expansion to offset that.  It's this contact that is the main earth path so you're relying on two things being pushed against one another by spring pressure.  As the brushes wear this force will decrease slightly but prob only with a negligible effect at a guess.
The edges of the plates are as stamped so are rough if you look at them closely, a simple job to sand them smoother for more/better contact surface.
A wire between plate and casing provides a more solid earth path but is fiddly to make and makes assembly of the motor more irksome than it already is.

As with the hot start issue as a whole there is no one fix solves all, as it's a result of multiple negative factors acting together to cause the problem.

It's not a fix, but a workaround that is good enough to stop me needing to look for an actual fix..
