Hi there, just joined the forum to gain some tiger knowledge.
I've been ruminating for some time about replacing my 2020 Street triple 765 RS, with either a Tiger 1050 Sport or Tiger 1050 SE.
Although I love the 765 for a local twisties bike, and don’t really want to part with it, but I find myself doing more weekends away to twisty roads further away.
I believe the Tiger would handle the occasional gravel road better, although its not something I search out, it does happen from time to time and I hate the thought off taking my 765 on gravel roads, its not that I hate dirt (I rode enduro and adventure bikes until a few years back) I just don’t want to spoil the appearance.
I feel the seating position would also be better as I find the 765 puts more weight through my arms than Id like (just turned 60). The suspension of the Tiger would hopefully handle the crap roads we have around here better too I’d hope.
Be interested to get ppls thoughts.

Hey Dustywheels,
I am new here myself. I wish I had some experience with a Street Triple to offer some comparison but I do not. I can report that during the brief time I have owned my 2008 Tiger 1050 I have been very happy with the purchase. I especially enjoy the way it handles the twisties. I am late 50s and do find the seating position fantastic. It is a wee bit tall. At 5'8" with 30 inch inseam, I don't have any problems with reaching the ground but, loss of flexibility makes mounting the bike seem like an athletic endeavor. For me, stepping up from a 400 cc Kawasaki, I find the power of the Tiger occasionally gives me a shiver. I expect coming from the 765, this would be less a concern for you.
I purchased the first Tiger 1050 I rode. In fact, before the Saturday I saw it listed on Craigslist I'd knew nothing of the bike. On Sunday, I spent a fraction of what I'd saved for a Tiger Sport 660 on the much more capable and equipped 1050. I hope you'll find the Tiger 1050 as satisfying as I have.

yes, that is my thinking. I there's is a nice 2020 model sport for sale on marketplace here in Oz. Hopefully I'll find one similar when I sell the 765.

The Tiger 1050 SE can be acceptable on gravel roads with the right tires. My favorite 80/20 was the Avon Trailriders.
IMHO, the stock suspension on the 1050 is pretty marginal for gravel roads / unpaved surfaces. That can be addressed with some work (and cost). You might find a nice one whose prior owner already invested in suspension upgrades, but if not plan for that cost.

with a 2018 TS. Have ridden through rough stuff and wooded areas. Seems fine if you go carefully however I would say it's not any better than other bikes. I guess that a change of tyres might affect it more positively. The Tiger's pretty tall & heavy for the off road stuff, so I do try and stick to the roads.

Plenty of us found our way here because we are no longer able or willing to endure the riding position of sports or street bikes. I can confirm the 1050s are great all day rides and good all rounders. Fine on gravel / bad roads but as JW says the stock suspension is a bit on the budget side, easily fixed though and probably not an issue unless you are a heavier rider. At the end of the day its a road bike so only better than the Street in those conditions because of the longer travel and softer suspension. If you think you need to swap to spoked wheels and/or knobblies for going off road then its probably not the best choice - otherwise you'll be fine. Its too top heavy for proper off road anyway - not an issue for me at 6'4" and mostly on road, but may be a factor to consider if you can ride a Street comfortably

thanks for your insight.
I think ppl have misunderstood my comments re gravel. Its not that I intend to go looking for it. More a case of being able get bye if by change I come across it on my travels. Hopefully I'll have do my reseach properly and avoid it.

Nitron rear shock with seperate chamber made huge difference to my 2009 tiger, able to have enough travel for bad roads whilst still having control. Transformed bike!

Second the Nitron rear shock. I acquired one from on this forum, but only got round to fitting it this year. The change in stability is phenomenal! But, as others have pointed out, then you become aware of how bad the front end is!
