Fitting new alternator. Advice please Guys
on: 23 November, 2021, 08:29:32 PM
Hi Guys. Advice warmly received.  I have alternator problem, actually it must be knackered. I used a meter and find its reading a short to earth on 2 of the 3 wires. I have a new rectifier on order also.
Ordered a new one on ebay, a question is it true you can replace the rectifier leads to a heavier gauge and put them straight onto the battery.
Any advice on the alternator / rectifier replacing
Do you need any special tools to remove
alternator.  I have replaced the rectifier before 2 years ago. 37000 miles on tiger .Cheers

I can't speak to the wiring questions.

I can say from experience that no special tools are needed to replace the stator. (alternator). Remember to order a replacement gasket and plan time to clean the old gasket material from the mating surfaces. That's the part that took the most time when I did mine. Other than that it's a simple job.

I'll add.
Once done, confirm output of alternator and function of the regulator.  Later being bad can take out the former.
Imagine the top 1/3 is toasted, lack of cooling.

Also probably good to apply some thread lock to the securing bolts.
Not good to have one come loose  :156:

Unfortunately yes. The wiring loom from stator to rectifier is fastened under the throttle bodies.

From memory the airbox needs lifting too, so you can cut the zip tie fixing the cable to the throttle body rail plus you may struggle feeding the connector down through the side between the engine & frame.
i put a little bit of grease on the connector body to help it through.
other than that its an easy job & you only lose a few drops of oil if you do it on the centre stand. good luck with it..  :031:
