12k service with critters
« on: 05 June, 2019, 03:43:52 AM »
Hey all - It's been a while since I posted on the forum but I still have my fantastic '07 yellow 1050 and it has come time to do the 12k mile service.

I thought folks might want to know what I found in my airbox:

So I guess the mice like to store seeds all over the place. I've found these black seeds in a few places and don't know what they are, but they don't belong in the airbox, that's for sure. The filter itself was packed with them, I guess the engine drawing air and the motion from riding was enough to shake them up into the filter element itself. Anyway, lesson learned, I'll start checking for this each spring. The bike does run better now with a clean filter - go figure  :001:

Everything else with the service went smoothly. All of the valves were in spec and I was relieved at not having to open up the cam cover and so on...
I did finally replace my clutch cable with one I've had for a few years now and I also noticed that the throttle cables were rusting inside the little barrels on the manifold end of the cables. I ordered a new set and just received them over the weekend, so I'll be replacing them in the next couple days as well.

It is hard to believe I've owned this bike 11 years - I bought it in '08 as a leftover. It has outlasted all of the other bikes I've owned and when I consider what's out there on the market today (lots of very nice shiny things), I would have a hard time parting with it.

Ride safe!

while you have the airfilter out -  be a good time to do the airbox mod  :028:
Yam RD125 DX, Kwak GPZ305, Honda CB400T, 1983 Kwak GT550, Suzuki GSF650 Bandit, Tiger 1050SE .... got there in the end.

Not sure about that - would make mouse access even easier!  :156:

Maybe airbox mod with additional mesh fitted to intakes?  :027:

Hi Junker,

Glad to hear the filter did it's job.
It may seem weird, but you really think it was mice? I suppose you're just joking about it :001:

You seem to have debris on the clean side of the airbox too...

I do think it was mice - I've seen these seed caches in a few places before

Yes, that was my fault while pawing through the junk on the dirty side - I took the whole thing out and cleaned it before closing it back up.
