The Tiger that stubles but never falls...
« on: 15 April, 2019, 04:24:16 PM »
Need some help with this one.  My 2008 Tiger ABS has developed a stutter and stumble at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle opening. It occurs randomly, and I can't make it happen. It comes and goes , sometimes it will go a 100 miles and not happen, then it will happen a number of times within 5-10 miles. When it occurs. it appears to be dropping a cylinder and just running on two cylinders. I can bring it back to normal running by opening the the throttle hard. Then it will hiccup and come on like gangbusters. So far I've run a couple of different fuel injector cleaners through it, and also some HEET, thinking it my be water in my gas, but to no avail. Anybody else run into this problem, and if so, how did you solve it? Thanks for any advice.

I was going to say injector cleaner. but you've done that.

How about trying a different brand of fuel? Or new set of plugs?

Intermittent problems are the worst.  Sometimes you just hafta let them develop until you and induce it and diagnose it - sorry.

Thanks guys for the tips....I'm putting in a new fuel filter tomorrow, and new plugs on Thursday.  It sure seems like it's fuel related, but I'll be open to any suggestions yo might have. I scanned it with an OBD II scanner and it didn't throw any codes.

Could it also be an air problem, a leak somewhere?  Badly misaligned throttle bodies?  Have you or anyone had the tank/airbox open or off?

I'd go for the simple stuff first, check for dirty or corroded connections, new plugs, check stick coils & their connections for corrosion.
Empty the tank, clean/replace fuel filter, new fuel. Could be water in tank, rusty water.

As Sidewinder says though, if you've had the tank off, check you haven't reversed the two tank breathers.
