2007 Tiger, non abs. starting issues, clutch switch suspected
« on: 12 February, 2019, 05:50:23 PM »
Hey folks, I took my battery off yesterday as i thought it had discharged enough to fail turning over the engine.
Its the upgraded battery by the way, 6 month old.
It turned twice and then made a sound like something disengaging/starter motor type sound.  It doesnt start to power up for another go without what seems to be clutch related as I move the lever from full in outwards, this doesnt work immediately and then its tries again to start but still only twice and then the starter motor sound.  It seems to be clutch switch type thing but its weird.

The odd thing is it clears the screen such as the fuel gauge etc, its like ive had a short somewhere and its reset from scratch.  my explanation doesnt do the problem justice but hope you get the idea.
Thanks for your help

Those symptoms sound a lot like when I had a duff cell in my battery - it happens to new(ish) ones too!

Agreed. Sounds like a battery issue.

It is EXACTLY the symptom of a bad or low voltage battery. After a few months on a Tender, I spun up the 1050 and had this precise issue. I put my battery on a real charger with a good injection of current and it took a while to get to optimal charge. Thereafter it spun the starter easily and fired right up.

Once super-charged - not just via 'maintaining' charge off the Tender, it has been faultless.

Can you check it with a multimeter, then check it under load eg with ignition on. I wouldn't try & start if it's struggling, don't want damage the sprag.

If you can try starting it with jump leads to a car battery, that'll confirm that everything else is OK, and that no issues with sprag starting mech or the clutch switch.

Thanks guys, my battery should be still good to take it back for a replacement .
Even when new it didn't seem that great.
Appreciate it as always.
I'll report back

Simple stuff like, are the battery terminals properly screwed on, clean & tight?   Same for earth point and starter motor terminal and to a lesser extent (as they are more protected) the terminals to the starter solenoid.

Took the battery back to Halfords and their tester showed the battery was faulty and needed replacing.
They gave me another new one. I fitted it and it fired up straight away, .
They wouldn't give another year warranty so I have until November for another fault to appear.
It already seems better than the last one which needed charging from day one.
Thanks guys, i probably would of been fault finding for hours if I hadn't replaced the battery
