CONNECTING TOMTOM TO TRIUMPH PLUG
« on: 02 November, 2018, 09:10:52 AM »
I have found what looks like a factory fit auxiliary power plug situated on the left-hand side of my TS (2017), It is similar to a 12v car aux plug but smaller but I cannot find any reference to it (only the one under seat, usb port).
If it is a 12v aux will it be fused (rating?)?
Is there a specific trade name for this type of plug?
Is there a patch cable available to connect this plug to a Tomtom 550, (round 2 pin plug)?

Thanks
Roger H

It's called, variously, a BMW, DIN or Powerlets socket. And it should be fused - as a standard fitting on the latest Sport.

You can buy various conversion cables on the internet (though probably a TomTom supplier the best source) to power your TomTom. But TBH, I think you'd be better off leaving it free so you can, for e.g., use it to charge your mobile phone or something. TomTom should have supplied a pukka connector loom to wire into the bike - I'd use that - there is another connection point under the tank. Or you could even use the USB port under the seat.

Note that the socket is unswiched or always live. So if you use a battery tender that's a good place to connect it.

I fitted a plug to the Tom-Tom docking wire & used that socket for a year or two. I've wired it to the horn now on my '14, dunno if you can do that on a '17, Tim will likely know, he's got the later model.

Plug I used

Edit, I got my plugs from here, a tad cheaper

Well you answered all my questions, I can now order a BMW din plug (may as well as I have the socket there) and make up a power lead for something.... However, I think I will hardwire the Tom Tom into a live source (maybe indicator as was suggested by Ukwes), That way I have the choice of switched and internal battery power. Thanks.
